The 15-Minute Pantry: Stock These 20 Staples
The Pantry That Cooks for You
A well-stocked pantry is the difference between “there’s nothing to eat” and “I can make 15 different meals.” These 20 staples are the foundation of fast cooking. Keep them stocked and you’ll never be more than 15 minutes from dinner.
Proteins
1. Eggs — Scrambled, fried, boiled, or turned into a frittata. The fastest, cheapest protein on the planet.
2. Canned tuna/salmon — Instant protein for rice bowls, salads, and wraps. No cooking required.
3. Canned beans — Black beans, chickpeas, cannellini. Protein + fiber in a can. Rinse and they’re ready.
Grains & Carbs
4. Pasta — Spaghetti, penne, or orzo. The ultimate 10-minute dinner base.
5. Rice — Keep both dry rice and microwave rice pouches for emergency speed.
6. Tortillas — Quesadillas, wraps, breakfast burritos, mini pizzas. Incredibly versatile.
7. Bread — Toast, sandwiches, breadcrumb coating, croutons. Keep a loaf in the freezer.
Canned & Jarred
8. Canned tomatoes — Diced and whole. The base of pasta sauce, soup, shakshuka, and stews.
9. Coconut milk — Instant curry sauce. Just add protein and vegetables.
10. Chicken/vegetable broth — Soup, sauce deglazing, cooking grains. Buy low-sodium.
11. Pesto — Instant pasta sauce, sandwich spread, or marinade.
12. Salsa — Taco skillet, eggs, rice bowls, dips. A flavor cheat code.
Fats & Acids
13. Olive oil — Cooking, dressings, finishing. Buy a decent extra virgin for both uses.
14. Soy sauce — Umami in a bottle. Essential for Asian-inspired dishes and marinades.
15. Vinegar — Rice vinegar for Asian dishes, red wine vinegar for Mediterranean, balsamic for everything else.
Flavor Builders
16. Garlic — Fresh is best but jarred minced garlic saves time. Used in almost every cuisine.
17. Onions — Yellow onions for cooking, red for raw. The flavor foundation of most dishes.
18. Lemons/limes — Brightness and acid that wakes up any dish. Keep both on hand.
Spice Essentials
19. The Core Five — Salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cumin, and smoked paprika. These five spices cover 90% of cooking.
20. Red pepper flakes — A pinch of heat transforms pasta, eggs, soups, and stir-fries.
The Rule of Three
With any 3 items from this list plus whatever’s in your fridge, you can make a meal: eggs + tortillas + salsa = breakfast tacos. Pasta + canned tomatoes + garlic = dinner. Rice + canned beans + cumin = burrito bowls. The pantry does the heavy lifting.
